UMAR ADAMU TSOHO (DIRECTOR STEEL AND NON-FERROUS METALS)

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND:

Umar Adamu Tsoho is an accomplished geologist and seasoned public servant with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Mining from the University of Jos, obtained in 1992. He began his career in 1994 as a Steel Officer II and has risen through the ranks to become the Director of the Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals Department. Over the years, he has actively participated in several national committees and technical workshops aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s steel industry, including key initiatives at the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL).

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS:

  • Integrity Award (2021): Honored by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for saving the Federal Government over ₦90 billion by preventing a major contractor claim at ASCL.

  • Presidential Public Service Merit Award (2022): Recognized for outstanding and exceptional service to the nation.

  • Leadership Roles: As Acting Director, he has been pivotal in implementing the department's mandate with dedication and integrity.

  • Team Management: Oversees a highly skilled team, ensuring smooth, coordinated, and efficient departmental operations.

FUNCTIONS OF STEEL AND NON-FERROUS METALS

About the Department

STEEL DIVISION

  • Initiating favourable policies for the growth and development of the metals industry
  • Regulating tariffs  on metal commodities and products
  • Removing unjustifiable non-tariffs that impede the industry’s access to international markets
  • Recommending appropriate measures to give effect to agreements entered into by the Federal Government
  • Put forward proposals for the revision and amendment of all existing Metallurgical regulations as deemed appropriate now and at times as may be necessary
  • Supervise Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited, Ajaokuta; and the Metallurgical Training Institute; Onitsha and the National Steel Council

 

NON-FERROUS METALS DIVISION

  • Monitoring development in the other sector of the economy that may have adverse effect on the metals sub-sector and recommending appropriate action
  • Make recommendation as necessary to regulate through an appropriate Act, the performance of the Metallurgical industry in liaision with all operators of the sector
  • Coordinate information Technology. skill acquision .innovation and new alloy development
  • Stimulation and promotion of SME’s in the metals sector and coordinate the support for small amd Medium Scale Metallurgical outfit
  • Issuance of permit to Import/Export Metals Products

 

What we do...

  • Formulating policies for the sustainable development of the metals industry in Nigeria
  • Establishing a metals data bank on the information and statistics for the metals industry
  • Promoting local Production of Metals for domestic, industrial and infrastructure development
  • Implementing the objectives of the National Industrial Policy as they relate to the metals sector
  • Putting in place necessary incentives to encourage local metals production
  • Regularly evaluating the pricing structures and quantity of metals products to ensure international competitiveness.
  • Encouraging the use of domestic metal products in the production of automobiles.
  • Coordinate the provision of manpower for the metals industry
  • Provision of institutional frameworks for sustainable development of the Metals industry

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE STEEL AND NON-FERROUS METALS (S&NFM) DEPARTMENT 

  • Initiating favourable policies for the growth and development of the metals industry
  • Regulating tariffs on metal commodities and products;

  • Appropriate fiscal and monetary policies to support the metals industries, 
  • Recommending appropriate measures to give effect to agreements entered into by the Federal Government;
  • Monitoring development in other sectors of the economy that may have adverse effect on the metals sub-sector and recommending appropriate action;
  • Recommending policies for improving infrastructural facilities in the metals industry;
  • Put forward proposals for the revision and amendment of all existing Metallurgical regulations as deemed appropriate now and at times as may be necessary;
  • Make recommendation as necessary to regulate through an appropriate Act, the performance of the Metallurgical industry in liaison with all operators of the sector;
  • Coordinate information Technology, skill acquisition, innovation and new alloy development;
